Still Just A Kitten

Been listening to Cat Power's...early music. She's dat OG badass singer/songwriter. Love her album What Will The Community Think. Chan's vocals are wandering and interesting. Very Thom Yorke like melodies post Ok Computer but with a more...lonesome feel. Chan makes you like you're in the middle of the ocean. The water's warm, but you're lost and there's really nothing but the current carrying you around. Bathysphere is my jam. Along with Nude As The News.

Girl Trouble

SPEEDY ORTIZ. Character from Love and Rockets (guy who wrote Ghost World wrote this). Also badASS band. I've been dwelling in the 90's indie pop scene lately (built to spill, modest mouse, death cab, breeders) and ohhh was I excited when I found these guys. Lyrical. Melodic. Punchy. Morbid. Emotional. SERIOUS GUITARIST. AND DRUMMER. AND BASS PLAYER. AND SINGER. Really great line up. Well produced. Yeah. Check em. Major Arcana is out.

Mgna Crta Hly Grl

Oh Jay-Z. I don't know. I bet I wouldn't dislike this album as much if I heard it before YEEZUSS...but hey. Everytime Jay-Z spits lines about mink and bitches I'm all like...WOOOW KANYE JUST SAID THAT. He bought all those lyric rights for Cobain's whole...HERE WE ARE NOW ENTERTAIN US scene and yeah...it doesn't really piss me off that much because if that's what Z thought would make his track cool then fine....do whatever pleases you homie. I just found the album to be main stream...boring...UN-ILLIN' and there were no holds barred for jackin' melodies and phrasing from various artists (a BIIIG JANK he stole was in his track...ummmm...Tom Ford. The phrasing he uses when he's spittin those lines, "Come up, come down. ???Ride clean fix your head in my crown???" are phrased exactly how M.I.A. phrases her whole, "hands up, hands tied. Don't go screaming if I blow you with a bang".). Knowing Z though he prob bought that from her. Whatever. Unimportant release.

Here's the whole album stream if yo interested. Check out track three though...listen to the M.I.A. song. Right? Right?

Cloud 9

Biking for hours listening to Cloud Nothings. Def a good choice. Check the baseline on No Sentiment off of their most recent release Attack on Memory...reminds me a little (A LOT) of Built to Spill's song Randy Described Eternity from the album Perfect From Now On (which is a perfect album. BTW)

Ba Ba Ba Ba Bound

"I just spoke to Jesus, he said WHAT UP YEEZUS." Yes. Yeezus is out. It's scorpion trashy. It's buffalo fun. It's HOT IN THE BUNGALOW. I've been psyched for this ish since I heard New Slaves...on a wall...in NYC...on YouTube. That track is so monster attractive. Anyway Yeezus, Kanye's 6th LP. From the beginning you can really hear the Death Grips...gripping Kanye's throat and slamming his head on the computer that spit out these beats. Kanye really embraces the whole industrial hip hop scene. WHICH I LOVE. It's the future I'm tellin ya. Music will just be metal grinding on metal soon enough. Kanye opens this LP with a great rap announcing Yeezus's coming and all his/its glory. Love this track. And Black Skinhead. I was kinda bummed though that this song wasn't as LOUD and INTRUSIVE as it was live on SNL. I mean it's a great song, well written, exciting, but NOT AZZZ exciting as it is live. Then shit gets real on I Am A God. Heavy song. #BIG EGO. Whatever though, it's chill. Near the end of this track Kanye spits this incredibly catchy line, "I just talked to Jesus, he said what up yeezus. I said shit I'm chillin, tryna stack these millions. I know he the most high, but I am a close high. Me casa su casa, that's that cosa nostra." Is it mindless shit or is it filled with existential meaning? It's bullshit but it is CATCHY AS HELL. (Also the first line off this album "Yeezus season aproachin fuck whatever yall been hearin. Fuck what, fuck whatever yall been wearin a monster bout to come alive again!" is AWESOME.) New Slaves is TANFASTIC. I still get goosebumps when I hear that song. The lyrics actually MEAN something (sadly unlike most of the album) and his flow is TOMMY NOBLE (sick). Justin Vernon rears his head on a few of these tracks too (Bon Iver) and does his whole autotune sick ass harmonies. Hold My Liquor..decent track. I'm In It, very interesting. I feel like this is one of the most personal tracks on the album. Kanye and his various females. I really like the rancid, moldy synths. Then we get to BLOOD ON THE LEAVES which is BRAVO GOD. Long track, GREAT SAMPLE. But there is WAAAAAAY TOO MUCH AUTOTUNE, GOD DAMN. KANYE YOU CAN'T SING! YOU KNOW IT! YOU SAY IT! STOP TRYING! IT'S SELF INDULGENT AND PAINFUL FOR US TO LISTEN TO! The content on this track (poppin mollyz and what not) is shallow and unimportant, but that Nina Simone sample really makes the song memorable. And paired with those sharp, CANNON ATTACK HORNS! The melody isn't AWFUL...but there is a lot to be desired. The rap near the end of the song is pro. One of my fav tracks. Guilt Trip is unimportant. Cool sample with Popcann saying some unintelligible crap. Sounds hella dope. Send It Up, also just meh. Nothing to report, but the last track on Yeezus...BOOOUNNDDDDD 2. Such a great track. Wow. Go Kanye. GREAT ASS SAMPLE. OLD SCHOOL. Rappin bout chicks and his "bad reputation". It's the best track on the album. Fresh. Catchy. Great way to close out the record, makes up for the two duds before it. YEEZUS.

You Probably Don't Know About These Tracks...

...but this is what I've been listening to lately.

Arthur Russell - Arm Around You
Visionary. NUFF SAID. Late 80s song was written. Highly suggest his album World of Echo. Very experimental and he has some beautiful sounds on there.

Ralph Stanley - Sure 'Nuff N' Yes I Do
Most FAV Beefheart cover on the soundtrack to the move Lawless. Pretty great soundtrack actually. Great track though. Play here.

Cat Power - Still In Love
Another cover. My favorite Cat Power song (next to Ruin) off of (I believe) her first LP Myra Lee. She sings this song like Thom Yorke would. I feel like this song feels more meaningful coming from a woman than a man. Hank Williams song.

The White Stripes - Jolene
And another cover. Again this song feels really different coming from White's mouth.

PJ Harvey - Ecstasy
AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH. Just go take a bite out of Rid of Me. It couples nicely with a side of used hypodermic needles and a glass of battery acid.

Sarah Vaughan - Why Can't I?
"Should girls be good girls? I think they should."

Flake Music - Spanway Hits
Before The Shins were The Shins they were Flake Music. Old single from their only album When You Land Here, It's Time To Leave. You can hear the Built to Spill influences all over the track, but Mercer's originality is there too. It's very evident in the lyrics. Cutting ties...far apart we are...etc.

The World Is A Beautiful Place & I Am No Longer Afraid To Die - Heartbeat In The Brain
#mouthful. Pretty cool new band TWIABP&IANLATD. Sounds like early Modest Mouse with some Cymbals Eat Guitars in there as well. A little tid bit of 3rd Planet riff-ige in there as well. Cool track, decent album.
"Yeezus season approachin' fuck whatever y'all been hearin'."

Now Playing

Interesting Australian band I found today, Hiatus Kaiyote. Very impressive for such a young band. Only one EP and it's not even officially released. Very Erykah Badu. Chill, jazzy, nice, a pinch of Little Dragon in there as well. Well worth a listen.
